Empowerment

Giving power and autonomy to your team

It's giving your team the authority, resources, and trust to make decisions without needing your approval at every step. It's not delegating tasks, it's transferring real power.

How to demonstrate empowerment in your first week as a manager?

Say: 'You have my trust to decide how to solve this. If you need context, ask me. But the final decision is yours.' This generates autonomy and commitment.

Real examples

A junior developer wants to try a new technology

Instead of: 'Let me review it first.' Better: 'I give you empowerment to research it. If you need budget or time, let me know. You decide if we implement it.'

Your team debates about a feature

Instead of: 'I decide what we do.' Better: 'I give you empowerment to reach consensus. My role is to support your decision, not impose it.'

Someone makes a mistake when making a decision

Instead of: 'That's why you need my approval.' Better: 'Empowerment includes learning from mistakes. What would you do differently next time?'
